Looking for a quick overview and comparison of some of the big players in the wireless soundbar market? Not sure what kind of smart soundbar is right for you? Then check out this short video to find out some more!
The main goal of a soundbar is to enhance your TV and movie watching experience. With TV’s becoming slimmer and slimmer, it’s no surprise that the sound quality hasn’t been able to keep up with the rapid growth of the picture quality. Wireless soundbars solve this problem. These all-in-one speaker systems are packed full of the latest and greatest in audio technology. If you’re looking to provide top quality sound for your TV, without taking up too much space around your living room, then a soundbar is perfect for you.
Essentially, wireless soundbars receive pieces of data (known as packets) through radio waves. These radio waves are either transmitted via a WiFi network, or through Bluetooth. The soundbar then sends back a ‘digital receipt’, confirming it received the packet and asking for the next one. This process takes place thousands of times per second. The audio output is produced by the process of the soundbar translating the packet into an audio signal. This translation is then sent to the soundbars speakers for output.
To put it simply, a WiFi connection ensures that the original audio files are kept intact, giving you the best possible quality. Bluetooth is a cheaper alternative but doesn’t provide as dynamic a signal for listening to the audio coming from your TV.
Because your soundbar is responsible for emitting a large range of sounds, ideally it should be positioned under your TV. This ensures that the sound is dispersed evenly throughout the room. In doing so, it will create an intuitive listening experience.
If you'd like your TV to be out of the way, then hanging it on the wall is also possible. Many soundbars have compatible wall mounts that allow you to attach the soundbar directly beneath the TV, keeping them out of the way of arm’s reach of the kids! Likewise, soundbars can easily be set under TVs resting on a TV cabinet or table.
There are two main ways to connect your soundbar to your TV with a cable. Here is a short overview of what each connection entails.
This connection supports a wide range of different audio formats which can be seen in the table below. You’ll want to make sure that your TV supports HDMI ARC (Audio return channel) before commiting to an HDMI connection. This should be clear by looking at the labels on your HDMI slots on your TV. Some TVs additionally require the HDMI CEC to be activated, an option that can be found in your TV's settings.
If your television doesn't have an HDMI port that supports ARC, optical is going to be the next best option. A toslink cable is the only thing you’ll need to send all the sound from your TV to your soundbar. However, as can be seen in the table below, high end sound quality is not supported through an optical port.
Most soundbars come from systems that include a whole range of other speakers, allowing you to create a full room experience. Choose from subwoofers, stereo sets and other small WiFi speakers that can be placed throughout the room. Working as one system, they interact with one another to each be responsible for different lows and highs, creating the ultimate experience akin to going to the movies.
